Nov 16, 2017 – “Sustainability in Textiles: The Case of San Francisco”

As Bay Area residents, we are all aware of the environment, and we work hard as individuals to do our part to walk gently on the earth. But we are all textile creators and users. What do we do with textile waste?

Dr. Connie Ulasewicz, the Chair of the Department of Family Interiors Nutrition and Appparel at San Francisco State University, pursued that question in a uniquely San Francisco way. She sought to find out what happens to the many textiles – sheets, towels, tablecloths and other items – used by the tourist and conference industry in the Bay Area, when they have worn out and must be discarded.

She and her colleague, Dr. Hamid Khani, Professor in the Broadcast & Electronic Communication Arts Department, produced a video that explores this issue.

At our November 16th meeting, Dr. Ulasewicz will be with us for the screening of the video and to discuss with us the issue of sustainability in textiles.

Play and Tell – July 20, 2017

This low-key summer meeting is a “Stitch and Bitch” concept, applied to our own range of fiber art. Bring something to the meeting you’d like to work on or play with or show off, or explain why it’s worth doing, or ask the gathering of experts for advice on … You get the picture. It is play and sharing and community in a relaxed summer mode. We’ll have refreshments too, and won’t stay late.

Tonight’s program will be held at Redwood City’s Veteran’s Memorial Senior Center, located at 1455 Madison Ave., Redwood City.  We’ll gather there after our meeting room, the Gold Start Room, doors open at 6:45 pm, and officially begin at 7:15 even though we’ll be very informal.

We’ll make reservations for dinner at 5:30 pm at the Redwood Grill. Its address is 356 Woodside Plaza, Woodside Rd., Redwood City, but you may find it simpler to look for it in that shopping center, at the corner of Massachusetts Ave and Woodside Rd.  It is only a few blocks from the Senior Center and has plenty of parking.

Movie Night – August 17, 2017

We’ll be viewing Nancy Harvey’s video, “Tapestry Techniques for Clothing Construction”, in which she shows a new tapestry-like technique which is fast and easy and has a supple hand light-weight enough to fashion into clothing. Then she shows techniques for assembling wearables from the new textile art. Viewing time is 101 minutes so we will choose chapters to show, rather than the whole thing. The video is owned by our Library so it will be available to check out afterwards.

Tonight’s program will be held at Redwood City’s Veteran’s Memorial Senior Center, located at 1455 Madison Ave., Redwood City. Our meeting room, the Gold Star Room, will open at 6:45 and the meeting will begin at 7:15, to facilitate operations for our new host, Redwood City Veterans’ Senior Center.

We’ll make reservations for dinner at 5:30 pm at the Redwood Grill. CNCH Retrospective Show and Tell – May 18, 2017

Tonight’s program will be held at Redwood City’s Veteran’s Memorial Senior Center, located at 1455 Madison Ave., Redwood City.  We’ll gather there from 7:00pm (the doors to our room are located inside the building so will be open already) and begin the program at 7:30.

Even though items begun or even finished at CNCH this year will be showcased, we also have space and time enjoy Show and Tell of every fiber sort from every fiber member.

Do come for an enjoyable evening. Refreshments and a short business meeting will conclude the meeting.
