Our regular meeting during December will be our traditional holiday potluck – bring a potful or trayful or treat to share. The kitchen will open early but our planned arrival time is 6 pm, with dinner commencing at 6:30 pm. The location is Woodside Village Church, 3145 Woodside Rd., as usual.
The gift requested of all who wish to participate is expected to be simple and fun for weavers, value no more than $15. We’ll exchange them anonymously using a clever game. Wrap your offering mysteriously to increase the anticipation of all us, viewers and possible nonparticipants alike.

Our speaker, Rebecca Burgess, lives in west Marin County. She is the author of “Harvesting Color, How to Find and Make Natural Dyes” (2011). She is also the founder of Fibershed, a program promoting local farmers who raise sheep and grow cotton. Rebecca was featured in the San Francisco Chronicle for her challenge to people to live one year wearing only clothing which was locally produced.

She teaches as well, offering classes for children and adults, and has developed a curriculum for children’s outdoor education.

Our second regular meeting of fall 2014 gathers at 7 pm at Woodside Village Church on Woodside Rd., Woodside.
Those who wish may join the group dining at Buck’s Restaurant on the right after the circle entering town, starting at 5:45 pm.
We socialize at the church parish hall till the program begins at 7:30 pm. The presenter this month is Barbara Shapiro, well known for writing, teaching, and personal artistry.

This month she is sharing images and objects from her recent trip to Japan, including her shibori samples from an in-depth 4-day workshop she attended early this summer, which she involved hands-on and up-close activities suited to experienced textile practitioners. She learned and will teach us the story of silk in Japan from silk worm farming and modernized filature, as well as a special under-kimono technique in red safflower dye, and then on to high-fashion houses in Tokyo (where no photos were allowed)

SUMMER 2015 – TBA
Our first meeting for the fall 2014 will feature Alfred Eberle, speaking and demonstrating silk reeling.
Reservations will be made at Buck’s at 5:45 pm for those who wish to eat together and visit beforehand. Everyone is welcome!
We begin to gather at 7 pm at Woodside Church further down Woodside Road, across from the school, beside the library. The library parking lot is available for our use, and usually too is parking in the school lot. The program begins at 7:30 pm.
Alfred will show use a mix of modern and antique equipment to carefully unwind silk cocoons onto bobbins. He will talk about warping with silk, show us his collection of naturally dyed silk textiles he has woven, and if possible give us a chance to try our own hand at silk reeling.

We break at 8:30 for refreshments, and complete the meeting with show and tell,
upcoming workshop business and the like.
We’ll meet at our usual location in Woodside Church Parish Hall at 7:30 pm. Dinner space will be reserved at Buck’s from 5:45 pm and anyone who wishes to, come!
This will be a Round Robin event with demonstrations of felting, plying with a spindle and with a spinning wheel, natural dyes from our own neighborhoods with dyed wool samples, and a special sort of challenge which Kathleen Dickey says is a lot of fun. If you just attended Teresa Ruch’s weaving for draping workshop earlier this month, bring some examples to share. If you’d like to demo a technique not on this list, bring that as well. See you there!

August 2-3
The purpose of this workshop is to understand how drape can be created in a handwoven fabric. It is a combination of fiber characteristics, yarn twist, the sett (ends per inch), the weave structure or the number of intersections of yarn per inch and the finish of the fabric. All of the factors contribute to the drape of the fabric.
This workshop would be held the first weekend in August at Amazing Yarns in Redwood City. Total cost would be about $200-$250 (includes $95 material fee) depending on the number of participants. Please contact Barbara O’Connor (mailto:barbara_oconnor@earthlink.net) if you are interested or need more information.
See Teresa website at http://www.teresaruchdesigns.com/ for some examples of her work.
It’s not too soon to put it on your calendar, we are having a Beginning Rug Weaving workshop with Jason Collingwood on October 10, 11-12, 2014. Learn the basics and when he returns for CNCH in 2015, you’ll be ready to take his more advanced class.
The workshop will be held at the home of Paula Dennis in La Honda, Ca. We will be accepting a deposit of $100 starting at the Guild meeting in April, with the final cost determined by the number of attendees.
